Exclusive: Skydance Says Fans Can “Celebrate” As Terminator Crosses $400M!
Arnold Schwarzenegger is getting the last laugh as his Terminator Genisys film, once considered a flop, is now a worldwide blockbuster. While the film underperformed in America, making nearly 89.5 million, the power of the fans and our love for the Terminator films worldwide continues to conquer any naysayers. Globally, Terminator Genisys is a major force at the box office, which has now passed the 400 million dollar mark! It's also the second week in a row being #1 in the international Box Office!
Before the film was released in China, Genisys, with a budget of 155 million, reached 323.5 million worldwide. Now Arnold’s film stands at 409.5 million!
“We are thrilled that the Terminator franchise continues to appeal to fans around the globe and the near record-breaking opening of Terminator Genisys at the Chinese box office is certainly cause to celebrate,” a Skydance Media spokesperson tells TheArnoldFans.
Skydance is very happy with this number and potential to reach up to 450 million, passing T3’s $433.371,112, making Terminator Genisys Schwarzenegger’s personal 2nd biggest hit in his movie career following T2. Another interesting fact is that Genisys is the first film ever to cross the $400 million mark without making $100M domestically.
In addition to story-confused critics and unfortunate trailer spoilers, the new PG-13 film rating also hurt the American box office. Interestingly enough, all of Arnold’s other top 10 movies are rated R. While Genisys is doing very well in ticket sales, perhaps this shows the studios that this film would have probably done even better if it were rated R, as the majority of Arnold’s fanbase wants their action hardcore. Bring back the horror elements and the hard R rating of the original Terminator for T6 and I guarantee the studios that American audiences will be back!
So how about that Sequel? We think T6 and T7 will happen! Genisys (155M film budget) is on target to beat T3 (200M film budget / 433M worldwide), which made enough to move forward with two more films. It is possible Paramount and Skydance Studios may want to lower the T6 budget to 130M but this could be fine considering they already have many millions of dollars worth of digital computer graphics (vehicles, buildings, actors and endoskeletons) already invested towards the sequel which can easily be recycled. The majority of fans had a blast with this worldwide money-maker and having Genisys pass this 400 million mark brings us one step closer to Arnold’s T-800 return.
